Depositing coatings uniformly around the circumference of fibers at high rate
is challenging due to the difficulty in manipulating multiple arrays of the, often
fragile, fibers to enable conformal coating and high throughput. Using DVD this
process is greatly simplified by using a highly focused vapor flux and non
line-of-sight coating conditions. Potential applications for fiber coating include
the deposition of metallic alloys on structural fibers to create metal matrix
composites, low shear strength coatings on the fibers used to create ceramic matrix
composites and the deposition of metals and solid electrolyte thin films for
synthesizing solid state fiber batteries. These processes could be used for the
deposition of metals on sacrificial fiber templates to create hollow fibers as well.
