One of the major advantages of the directed vapor deposition process is that the gas
jet can be adjusted for laminar flow. Under these conditions, its streamlines attach
to the entire surface of a nonplanar substrate. When high pressures are employed,
the mean-free-path between collisions of the vapor and gas jet atoms can be reduced
to a dimension much shorter than the scale of the part being coated, yielding
efficient non-line-of-sight coating without manipulating the substrate. As shown in
the illustration below, directed vapor deposition can be used to apply a uniform copper
coating on a stationary stainless steel wire.
